Common chainsaw and trimmer problems
Pulls but won't start
Usually old fuel, a clogged carburetor or a cracked fuel line. Small two-stroke fuel lines often harden and split with age.
Starts but dies at full throttle
A lean condition from a partly blocked carburetor, a plugged fuel filter in the tank, or a clogged spark arrestor screen.
Chain doesn't get oil
A blocked oil passage on the bar, a clogged oil filter, or a worn oil pump. Running a chain without oil quickly ruins the bar and chain.
Cord is hard to pull or won't retract
A broken recoil spring or a worn starter assembly. Replacement starters are available for most common models.
Use the right fuel mix
Two-stroke engines burn oil mixed into the gas. Using straight gas, the wrong ratio, or mix that's months old is the most common reason these tools end up in the shop. Check your owner's manual for the ratio and mix only what you'll use in a month or so.
What affects the cost?
Every repair is quoted before work starts. The main factors are:
- The type of tool and brand
- Carburetor cleaning versus replacement
- Fuel lines, filters and starter parts needed
- Chain and bar condition

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my weed eater start?
The usual causes are old mixed fuel, a clogged carburetor or cracked fuel lines. A fouled spark plug or blocked spark arrestor screen can also cause trouble.
Can you sharpen my chainsaw chain?
Yes. Chain sharpening can be done on its own or along with a repair. Badly damaged chains may need replacing.
What fuel mix should I use?
Follow the ratio in your owner's manual. Many modern two-stroke tools use 50:1, but some older equipment uses a different ratio. Use fresh gas and a quality two-stroke oil.
Do you repair leaf blowers and hedge trimmers?
Yes, gas-powered leaf blowers, hedge trimmers, edgers and similar two-stroke tools can be repaired.
Is it worth fixing an inexpensive trimmer?
If the engine has good compression, a carburetor and fuel line repair is often well worth it. We'll let you know if a repair doesn't make sense for the cost.
