Common lawn mower problems
Starts, then dies
Usually a partly blocked carburetor jet from stale, ethanol-blended gas. A proper carburetor cleaning normally fixes it.
Surging or hunting
The engine revs up and down because it isn't getting a steady fuel supply. Again, the carburetor or a dirty fuel filter is the usual suspect.
Blue or white smoke
Often oil on the muffler after the mower was tipped the wrong way, or an overfilled crankcase. Persistent smoke can point to worn engine parts.
Ragged, uneven cut
A dull or bent blade tears grass instead of cutting it. Sharpening and balancing makes a visible difference to the lawn.
Repair or replace?
If a repair would cost more than about half the price of a comparable new mower, replacing it can make sense. A good-quality mower with a sound engine is usually worth fixing. We'll tell you honestly which side of that line your mower falls on before any work is done.
What affects the cost?
Every repair is quoted before work starts. The main factors are:
- The make, model and age of the mower
- Whether it needs a cleaning or a full carburetor replacement
- Parts availability for older or less common brands
- Add-ons such as blade sharpening or a full tune-up

Frequently asked questions
Why won't my lawn mower start after winter?
The most common reason is stale gas. Fuel that sits for more than a month or two starts to break down, and ethanol-blended gas can leave varnish in the carburetor. A dirty spark plug or air filter can also prevent starting.
How often should a lawn mower be serviced?
Once a year is a good rule for most home mowers, ideally before the mowing season starts. Service includes an oil change, new spark plug, clean air filter and a sharp blade.
Can you sharpen my lawn mower blade?
Yes. Blade sharpening and balancing can be done on its own or as part of a tune-up. An unbalanced blade causes vibration that wears out the engine and deck.
Do you repair electric or battery mowers?
This service focuses on gas-powered mowers. If you have a battery or corded electric mower, mention it in your request and we'll let you know if it can be looked at.
What information should I include when requesting a quote?
The brand and model (usually on a sticker on the deck), the engine brand if you know it, and a short description of what's happening. Photos help too.
